Five American soldiers were injured in a shooting incident at Fort Stewart military base, located in Georgia, after an Army sergeant opened fire using a personal handgun. The shooter, identified as Quornelius Radford, reportedly targeted his fellow troops before being restrained by others on site. The base was locked down during the chaotic event, which occurred approximately 240 miles southeast of Atlanta.

Brigadier General John Lubas confirmed that all five injured soldiers are currently in stable condition and receiving medical attention. He praised the heroism of fellow soldiers who promptly subdued Radford, stating that their quick response likely prevented further casualties. The sergeant, part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, is now in pre-trial confinement as military investigators look into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

While Radford has no prior combat deployment history, it has been revealed that he was previously arrested for driving under the influence, a fact that was unknown to military officials until after the shooting. Three of the injured soldiers required surgical procedures, and authorities are investigating how Radford was able to bring a non-military-issued handgun onto the base.

The incident prompted law enforcement to respond swiftly, with the shooter being apprehended just 39 minutes after the first reports emerged. Eyewitness reports described the scene as panic-stricken, with military personnel evacuating and civilians taking shelter in safe rooms, including employees from a Burger King restaurant on the base.

In response to the shooting, President Donald Trump emphasized the importance of holding the perpetrator accountable, dubbing the act an "atrocity." Georgia Governor Brian Kemp urged residents to keep the victims and their families in their thoughts and prayers, highlighting the collective concern within the community.

Fort Stewart is a sprawling Army base that spans nearly 280,000 acres and hosts about 10,000 individuals, situated in Hinesville, approximately 40 miles southwest of Savannah.
