In brief

A recent study indicates that people may not accurately interpret their dogs' emotional states, often influenced by situational cues rather than the dogs’ physical signals. Researchers observed participants watching videos of dogs responding to various stimuli, including familiar objects that could elicit both positive and negative reactions. Findings suggest a significant tendency for viewers to misjudge these emotional responses based on misleading edits within the videos, causing confusion regarding the dog's true feelings.

According to Holly Molinaro, a doctoral student at Arizona State University and lead author of the study published in Anthrozoös, humans may mistakenly think they understand their dogs' emotional reactions. “When we perceive dog emotions, we tend to rely on external factors rather than focusing on the dog's actual behavior,” she emphasized. This misinterpretation can jeopardize an owner’s understanding of their pet’s emotional well-being. Thus, she advises dog owners to take a moment to observe their pets closely and attentively. The inspiration for this research emerged in 2021 during the early stages of Molinaro’s PhD work concerning canine emotions, coinciding with the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that limited her traditional research methods.
