The bear involved in the attack has not been euthanized yet, and an investigation into the matter is currently underway. Romania hosts the largest population of brown bears in the European Union, with recent studies indicating numbers between 10,400 and 12,800 bears—far exceeding the sustainable population of around 4,000 suggested by former environment minister Mircea Fechet. Following several fatal incidents involving bears in recent years, calls have amplified for effective regulation and prevention efforts.

Officials are proposing the creation of risk zone maps to improve bear management while addressing public safety concerns. Gabriel Paun, founder of environmental NGO Agent Green, noted that the ongoing bear-related fatalities reflect a more significant issue of mismanagement rather than overpopulation, highlighting the failure of local and national authorities to ensure the safety of both humans and wildlife. He raised concerns over the threats posed to bear populations from climate change, habitat loss, and increased trophy hunting. To further enhance public safety, Sanduloiu suggested implementing stricter penalties for those who feed or interact with bears.
