In brief

Malaria cases in Ethiopia have drastically increased this year, reversing years of progress, with over 6.1 million infections and significant mortality reported. Experts warn that the situation could worsen as peak malaria season approaches, urging urgent action to address the rising threat.

Malaria infection rates in Ethiopia are experiencing a concerning surge fueled by a combination of climate change, civil conflict, and growing resistance to both treatments and insecticides. Data reveals that 2024 has already seen over 6.1 million malaria cases and 1,038 fatalities by September, starkly contrasting the 4.5 million cases and 469 deaths documented for the entirety of 2023. The peak malaria season, which kicks off with the rainy periods from September to December, is anticipated to heighten this alarming trend even further.Dr. Fitsum Tadesse, the lead scientist for the malaria program at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute in Addis Ababa, lamented, "We’re backsliding so fast — we’ve gone back a decade.” The rising incidence of drug-resistant malaria parasites and increasingly resilient mosquito populations are integral to the resurgence. Moreover, these mosquitoes are adapting in ways that diminish the effectiveness of existing malaria diagnosis tools. This distressing trend in Ethiopia may signal challenges looming for neighboring countries facing similar environmental and biological pressures amid ongoing conflicts and climate-related vulnerabilities. Experts stress the urgency of re-evaluating strategies to combat malaria in the context of these escalating challenges to public health across the region.
