In brief

Cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun outbid six others at Sotheby's to acquire the viral installation "Comedian"

Maurizio Cattelan's controversial artwork, featuring a banana duct-taped to a wall, has achieved a staggering sale price of $6.2 million (£4.9 million) at a New York auction held by Sotheby's. This figure is a shocking four times higher than the pre-auction estimate. The winning bid was placed by Justin Sun, a Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur who bested six competing bidders for the piece. Commenting on his acquisition, Mr. Sun expressed his intention to consume the banana as part of this distinctive artistic experience. Interestingly, the banana, which could now be considered one of the priciest pieces of fruit ever sold, was purchased earlier in the day for just $0.35, according to reports from the New York Times. First introduced to the public in 2019, "Comedian" has become a viral phenomenon and sparked intense discussions surrounding the definition of art. The installation has toured numerous locations and includes guidance on how to replace the banana once it deteriorates. Remarkably, the banana has been consumed on two separate occasions; in 2023, a South Korean art student took a bite during a display at Seoul's Leeum Museum, after which the museum provided a replacement. In a previous incident four years earlier, a performance artist removed the banana from the wall when the artwork sold for $120,000 at Art Basel Miami, only for it to be swiftly replaced.Justin Sun, the founder of the Tron blockchain network which supports certain cryptocurrency transactions, has faced allegations of fraud from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, claiming he misrepresented trading volumes of TRX. Mr. Sun denies these accusations.
