The wife of South Korea's imprisoned ex-president, Yoon Suk Yeol, has been arrested, facing multiple charges that include stock manipulation and bribery. During a four-hour court session in Seoul, former first lady Kim Keon Hee firmly denied the accusations, yet the court issued a detention warrant, expressing concerns that she might tamper with evidence.
This situation marks a notable first in South Korea’s political landscape, as both the former president and first lady find themselves behind bars. Yoon was detained earlier this year, embroiled in a case tied to a failed martial law attempt that caused significant turmoil and ultimately led to his removal from office.
Allegations against Kim, 52, include generating over 800 million won (approximately $577,940) through a price-rigging operation involving Deutsch Motors, a local BMW dealer. Although these activities took place prior to Yoon's election, they later cast a shadow over his presidency. In addition, she stands accused of accepting bribes from the Unification Church, including Chanel bags and a diamond necklace, in exchange for business favors.
Further charges allege her interference in candidate nominations during the 2022 parliamentary by-elections and last year’s general election. Appearing in court in a black suit and skirt, Kim expressed remorse for the trouble caused, despite stating her insignificance in the broader context.
While serving as president, Yoon vetoed several opposition-led bills aimed at investigating allegations against Kim. His final veto occurred just a week before he declared martial law. Following Yoon's ouster, a special counsel investigation was initiated in June under the new presidency of Lee Jae Myung.
