In brief
Tesla has seen a drastic decrease in profitability for the year 2024, as the electric vehicle market faces fierce rivalry, particularly from competitors in China, Europe, and the United States. Despite the challenges, investors maintain a focus on the potential of Tesla's self-driving technology.
Tesla announced on Wednesday a profit of $2.3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024, a sharp decline from $7.9 billion reported for the same period in 2023. Notably, last year’s figures were bolstered by a one-time tax benefit amounting to $5.9 billion, making this year’s drop more pronounced. When excluding this singular gain, the company’s operating profit fell by 23 percent over the last quarter. Overall sales increased slightly by 2 percent, totaling $25.7 billion compared to $25.2 billion year-over-year.For the entirety of 2024, Tesla’s profits dropped to $7.1 billion from $15 billion in 2023, even as sales edged up to $97.7 billion, up from $96.8 billion the previous year. The company has diversified its offerings by selling batteries that support electric utilities and homes harness solar energy, which mitigated some of the sales shortfalls from its vehicle lineup.Despite these efforts, Tesla's reliance on its two flagship models—the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y sport utility vehicle—has placed it at a disadvantage compared to competitors that are broadening their electric vehicle portfolios across various segments.
