In brief
The Labour Party has suspended MP Dan Norris after his arrest on charges including sexual offenses and misconduct.
Britain’s Labour Party announced on Saturday the suspension of MP Dan Norris following his recent arrest by police. The party quickly acted upon learning of Norris' arrest, stating that “it cannot comment further while the police investigation is ongoing.” Although the specifics of his arrest have not been disclosed, reports indicate that the 65-year-old lawmaker faces allegations of serious offenses including rape, child sex crimes, child abduction, and misconduct in public office. The Avon and Somerset Police, in a statement issued shortly after Norris's arrest, confirmed that a male suspect in his sixties had been arrested on charges involving sexual offenses against a minor, highlighting that investigations relate to both incidents from the 2000s and a recent alleged offense of rape occurring within the last few years. Mr. Norris has since been released on conditional bail.Following his arrest, Norris' potential role in the House of Commons is now in jeopardy, as he is suspended from the party pending the outcome of the investigation. The MP, who in 2024 successfully contested a seat in Parliament from North East Somerset and Hanham, previously unseated a former Conservative minister. Aside from being a member of Parliament, Norris also serves as the elected mayor of the West of England, a position he has held since 2021, although he has indicated he will not seek re-election in the forthcoming May 1 vote.Norris’s political tenure spans over two decades, during which he served from 1997 until 2010, represented the Wansdyke constituency, and held prominent roles, including assistant whip and junior minister during the Labour administrations of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. The Labour Party's swift action underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the party’s commitment to addressing issues of misconduct.
