In brief
Northvolt, once regarded as Europe's pivotal player in battery manufacturing, has officially filed for bankruptcy in Sweden. This move signals the collapse of what many viewed as the continent's primary opportunity to challenge Asian battery manufacturers.
On March 12, 2025, Northvolt announced its bankruptcy following months of financial struggles, including job cuts and operational restructuring. The company, known for its Northvolt Ett factory in Skellefteå, sought Chapter 11 protection in the U.S. last year to secure additional time for funding efforts. Ultimately, the challenge of obtaining necessary financial support became insurmountable. A court-appointed trustee will oversee the sale of Northvolt's assets while subsidiaries in Germany and North America remain unaffected by the bankruptcy process.Founded in 2016 by a former Tesla executive, Northvolt aimed to capture a significant share of the European battery market, targeting 25% by 2030. Despite securing a $5 billion loan from the European Union last year, obstacles such as accidents at its Swedish facility and losing a crucial contract with BMW, worth €2 billion ($2.15 billion), proved detrimental. Tom Johnstone, interim chairman, remarked on the failure to meet the required financial conditions for continued operation, highlighting the challenges faced amidst stiff competition from established South Korean and Chinese battery manufacturers.
