In brief

In a remarkable dive, Alex Davis found a 1965 graduation ring, leading to a heartwarming reunion with its long-lost owner.

In a stunning turn of events, dive instructor Alex Davis, based in Barbados, recovered a graduation ring that had been missing for nearly 50 years. On a serene October morning, Davis was utilizing his metal detector while diving near the southern coast when he struck gold — literally. As he explored below the surface, Davis's detector emitted a promising signal. Intrigued, he began to clear away rocks and sand. After shifting just the right amount, he was greeted by the sight of a striking gold ring, its polished maroon stone sparkling in the sunlight peeking through the water. The ring was adorned with "McMaster University" and the year 1965, alongside the university's eagle emblem. Captivated by the find, Davis humorously compared his glimpse of the ring to the iconic moment from "The Lord of the Rings" when the character Sméagol discovers the One Ring.Upon retrieving the treasure, Davis examined the inscription and found the initials “FMP” engraved inside the band. This prompted him to reach out to the McMaster University alumni association for assistance in tracking down the owner. His discovery not only marked a personal triumph but also reignited memories and nostalgia for someone who had mourned the loss of this meaningful piece for decades.
