In brief
As the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Alfred dissipate, eastern Australia faces ongoing flood threats, prompting emergency responses and community evacuations.
East coast sections of Australia are experiencing the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, which while downgraded, continues to unleash heavy rains and pose significant flooding risks. On Saturday, officials reported one missing person, widespread power outages affecting over 300,000 homes, and active flood rescues in areas like New South Wales. The cyclone, which brought severe weather across the region, had largely skirted Brisbane but the slow-moving system has led to dangerous conditions further south. Premier Chris Minns noted that the town of Dorrigo was hit hardest, receiving an astonishing 10 inches of rain overnight, with emergency services actively searching for a man missing after his vehicle was swept away by floodwaters. Emergency responders reported conducting 30 flood rescues in just 24 hours, predominantly assisting individuals trapped in vehicles on flooded streets. In the Northern Rivers region, evacuation orders remain in effect for several communities, particularly in Lismore, which has a history of devastating floods. Local forecasters also warned of potential levee breaches as heavy rains are expected to persist. Looking ahead, Mr. Minns outlined plans for a swift recovery, ensuring a coordinated response to mitigate prior criticisms faced following the catastrophic 2022 floods. As communities brace for the ongoing storm impacts, the urgent need for effective recovery strategies remains clear.
