Intensive search operations are underway for four US soldiers unaccounted for during training near the Belarus border.

Lithuanian military forces are actively searching for four US soldiers who have been missing for two days during a training exercise in Pabrade, close to the border with Belarus. Reports indicate that their tracked vehicle was found submerged in water, raising concerns about their safety. The Lithuanian army confirmed on social media that a dedicated rescue operation is in full swing, although there has been no official confirmation of any fatalities. NATO chief Mark Rutte initially suggested the possibility of their deaths but lacked further details at the time.

The soldiers, identified as being part of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, were engaged in scheduled tactical training when they went missing on Tuesday afternoon. A potential scene linked to their disappearance has been discovered, prompting intensified efforts from Lithuanian and foreign troops, alongside helicopters and state border guards to locate them. Lithuanian Defence Minister Dovile Sakaliene stated that emergency medical support teams were on standby to respond quickly if needed. The presence of over 1,000 American troops in Lithuania, stationed on a rotational basis, underscores the strong military cooperation between the US and the Baltic nation. Lieutenant General Charles Costanza, who commands the V Corps, expressed his gratitude towards the Lithuanian armed forces for their prompt assistance in the search efforts.
