In brief

Kat Albrecht, a former police officer, turned her quest to find her lost bloodhound into a career as a lost-pet detective. By understanding animal behavior and training others in the process, she has made a significant impact on the community through her Missing Animal Response Network.

In 1996, Kat Albrecht was a police officer and bloodhound handler in Santa Cruz, California, involved in search and rescue missions. When her own bloodhound, A.J., went missing, there were no animal rescue professionals available to help her. Instead, Albrecht called upon a friend with a golden retriever, Kea, to trace A.J.’s scent. To her surprise, Kea was successful, locating A.J. within 20 minutes on a stranger’s porch. This pivotal moment inspired her to explore a new path. Albrecht questioned why detection dogs were primarily utilized for drugs and bombs, yet none existed specifically for lost pets. She embarked on a journey to change that, becoming a lost-pet detective. Over the years, she collaborated with researchers to understand the behaviors of lost animals and established the Missing Animal Response Network. This organization trains individuals to find lost pets while offering support to distressed pet owners. Though Albrecht no longer personally searches for missing animals, her training of others ensures that her impact continues. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Albrecht discussed her techniques for locating lost pets. One key aspect involves examining the distinct behaviors of cats and dogs when they are lost, acknowledging their differences just as one would compare apples to oranges.
