In brief

In a significant court appearance, Hong Kong's pro-democracy figure Jimmy Lai testified, asserting that his now-defunct publication, Apple Daily, symbolized the cherished freedoms of the city. Accused of colluding with foreign forces and leading protests, Lai could face a life sentence if convicted.

After spending nearly four years in jail, prominent media tycoon Jimmy Lai took the witness stand at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts in Hong Kong on Wednesday, offering his first statement since his arrest. The 77-year-old, a staunch pro-democracy advocate, emphasized that his newspaper, Apple Daily, stood for the freedoms that residents hold dear. Lai is accused by prosecutors of orchestrating anti-government protests that erupted in 2019 and of conspiring with foreign entities to impose sanctions against Hong Kong and China in retaliation for the suppression of dissent. He faces grave charges associated with the national security law, with the possibility of a life sentence looming over him if found guilty. Operating the popular Apple Daily, which is now defunct, Lai played a central role in propelling the pro-democracy movement and was known for amplifying protest messages through editorials and cartoons. During his testimony, Lai articulated the newspaper's mission, stating that it was rooted in principles such as rule of law, democracy, freedom of speech, religion, and assembly. In an emotionally charged courtroom, he expressed, “The more information you have, the more you’re in the know, the more you are free,” underscoring his belief in the power of information as a tool for liberation. As his trial unfolds, Lai's fate remains uncertain, and the implications of his case resonate deeply within the pro-democracy narrative in Hong Kong and beyond.
