The small township of Baruipur, just outside Kolkata, has been gripped by terror following the discovery of an 11‑year‑old girl's body in a local pond. Police recovered the body after a mob handed the accused husband, Prabhash Mondal, into their hands.

Family members say the girl went missing on Saturday afternoon while buying a birthday present. They filed a missing‑person report at the police station at 8:30 p.m., yet the police allegedly told them they would look into it the next day.

Villagers found CCTV footage of the girl walking with Mondal and then inspected through the footage themselves, eventually catching and handing him over to police. A few hours later a sack containing the girl's body was pulled from the pond, with rumours that Mondal led the police to the exact spot.

Police amended the complaint to include charges under the POCSO law, but have yet to hold a press conference responding to the allegations. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by the state government.

The discovery sent the streets wild. A mob vandalised roads, shops and a railway station; a young man was beaten to death, and 40 people were detained. The Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, visited the village to meet the victim’s family, assuring them of justice and the government’s commitment to women's safety.

The unrest has further strained the newly elected BJP’s fragile grip on West Bengal for the first time, amid accusations that the state has failed to protect women. Opposition leaders and rights activists condemn the police’s alleged in‑coup encounter killing of Mondal, calling it suspicious and a violation of the rule of law. They point to similar incidents in other states and raise concerns over extrajudicial killings by police.

With protests continuing and authorities heavily deploying police and paramilitary forces, the state remains on high alert. Public gatherings are banned, and the situation hangs on a knife‑edge between law enforcement and citizen outrage.
