In brief

Authorities arrested two people linked to the disappearance of a man after clear evidence surfaced through virtual surveillance.

An unremarkable image captured by Google Street View has turned into a crucial piece of evidence in a missing-person investigation in Spain. The photo, taken in the small hamlet of Tajueco in the northern province of Soria, depicted a man loading a white bag into his car's trunk. This finding became instrumental for the National Police in tracing the whereabouts of a man who vanished last year.On Wednesday, law enforcement officials announced the arrests of a woman, suspected to be the partner of the missing individual, and a second man, identified as her accomplice. Both suspects were apprehended at different locations in Soria, approximately 100 miles from Madrid. Following their arrests, investigators were able to recover human remains believed to be related to the missing case, although the police have yet to publicly identify any of the individuals involved. The police released a statement revealing that the two detainees are suspected of "aggravated illegal detention" and will be charged in relation to the victim's disappearance and presumed death. They indicated that while the Google Maps images were not the sole evidence leading to the arrests, they played a significant role in illuminating crucial details during the investigation process.
