Stanley has announced a significant recall of approximately 2.6 million stainless steel travel mugs due to concerns that loose lids may result in burn injuries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) made the announcement, highlighting that the recall affects all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action mugs sold in the U.S. between June 2016 and December 2024. The issue arises from the threads on the polypropylene lids, which can shrink under heat and torque, leading to a potential detachment during use.
Retailers including Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Dick’s Sporting Goods have sold these mugs, which range from $20 to $50 in price and are available in various colors such as black, white, and green. Reports indicate that 91 incidents worldwide have involved lid detachments, which resulted in 38 burn injuries, 16 of which occurred in the United States.
Stanley, a Seattle-based company known for its outdoor gear, emphasized its commitment to product quality and safety, urging customers to discontinue use and contact the company to receive free replacement lids. The brand, which has experienced a surge in popularity particularly among younger consumers, has gained traction on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Its tumblers, distinct from the recalled mugs, are often featured as trendy fashion items.
Founded over a century ago by inventor William Stanley Jr., the company traditionally catered to outdoor enthusiasts, but its products have recently become cultural sensations, largely driven by influencer marketing and viral trends.
