In brief

The NOAA and University of Rhode Island team aboard the Lake Guardian is mapping shipwrecks in Lake Ontario, using underwater drones to uncover the maritime history of the region, which holds 63 sunken vessels dating back to the 19th century.

In a thrilling exploration of history, the Lake Guardian, an Environmental Protection Agency research vessel, set sail from Oswego, N.Y., into the depths of the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. This vast area spans 1,722 square miles, extending from New York State to the Canadian border, and is home to a remarkable 63 shipwrecks that offer a glimpse into the maritime past of the region. The expedition team, comprising NOAA maritime archaeologists and students from the University of Rhode Island, aims to create three-dimensional models of these sunken vessels, starting with about a dozen. They have enlisted the help of Rhody, a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with a high-definition camera that has captured breathtaking images of the wrecks. These visual records are instrumental in producing detailed computer models, reflecting the rich historical narratives hidden beneath the water's surface.Dr. Benjamin Ioset, a NOAA maritime archaeologist and a New York native, expressed his excitement for the research potential of this site, having developed a deep connection with the region since beginning to dive in these waters at age 14. "There’s lifetimes worth of research potential here," he emphasized as the team prepared to examine the vessels. During a brief return to port on Thursday, the Lake Guardian hosted a visit from Oswego High School students. Dr. Ioset was inspired by their curiosity as they learned about the fascinating history of the shipwrecks, which might seem more at home in the Mediterranean or Arctic, yet lie right in their backyard. This exploration not only aims to uncover stories of the past but also to instill a sense of wonder and appreciation for the extraordinary narratives hidden beneath Lake Ontario.
