German prosecutors have filed charges against a Ukrainian national, identified only as Serhii K because of privacy laws, with leading the 2022 blowing up of the Nord Stream pipelines beneath the Baltic Sea.
He is alleged to have organised a team that destroyed three of the four pipelines that transport Russian natural gas to Germany, releasing a record‑breaking amount of methane into the sea and rendering the infrastructure inoperable.
The indictment was served at a German court Wednesday; no details of the charges were disclosed. The suspect was previously arrested in Italy last summer and extradited to Germany in November, and he denies all involvement.
The prosecution could strain Germany‑Ukraine relations, as Germany remains a major supplier of military aid to Ukraine. No state actor has yet been conclusively linked to the attacks, and Ukraine deflects any blame.
