In brief

Operation Vivaldi has pushed Russian forces back in the Donbas, freeing 277 square kilometres and advancing Ukraine’s strategic foothold. The offensive relied on drones, autonomous vehicles and the satellite‑based Starlink network for real‑time communications and targeting. Last week Ukraine reported unexpected Starlink restrictions, sparking concern over reduced battlefield connectivity. Despite diplomatic strains with Washington, Ukrainian soldiers speak of renewed confidence and the value of technological resilience.

In the last month, Ukraine’s counter‑offensive dubbed Operation Vivaldi has pushed Russian forces back across the Donbas, reclaiming 277 sq km—over 100 sq mi—of territory near the Lyman area. The rapid advance was achieved through a combination of ground troops, unmanned aircraft, and the satellite connectivity provided by Starlink’s Starshield system. Intelligence reports show Ukrainian forces using drones to drop nets on enemy spotters and to deliver supplies directly to front‑line troops, while ground units swapped positions every three months to avoid static defence.

The offensive’s name, inspired by Vivaldi’s four‑season violin concerto, reflects its staged nature: four phases of manoeuvre that forced Russia to redirect resources to prevent a pincer move around key Fortress Belt cities. Ukrainian commanders insist the operation inflicted about 8,000 Russian casualties in Vivaldi alone, and close to 50,000 over September, while Ukrainian losses were minimal.

However, a sudden restriction on Starlink services has jeopardised the network’s role in the battle – a tool that delivered live feeds, command‑and‑control, and target‑designated strikes. Ukrainian officials say the limitations were imposed without warning, raising alarm that future operations could run out of reliable communication and coordination. Elon Musk and some media reports speculate that Washington may have requested the curtailment, a claim that would deepen distrust between Kyiv and its longtime tech‑supplier.

Despite the looming threat of restricted connectivity, morale among soldiers remains high. Interviewed veterans describe a renewed sense of purpose and confidence that the battle is moving toward victory. For many, the ground gains justify the technological gambles and cement the importance of cyber‑supply chains in modern warfare.

The Starlink controversy comes as diplomatic tensions flare: President Zelenskiy voiced feeling “betrayed” by former US President Trump, while Washington’s leadership remains critical of Ukraine’s strikes on Russian oil infrastructure. Yet Ukrainian forces press forward, relying on both human resolve and the remaining reach of satellite links to maintain pressure along the front lines.
