Ugandan Football Legend David Owori Fatally Beaten Near Home
The football world mourns the death of 27‑year‑old captain David Owori, who was beaten to death by suspected robbers near his home in Makindye, a suburb of Kampala.
Police said the attack began when Owori tried to resist a robbery attempt that included a hit with a paving stone, leaving him unconscious. He was taken to a nearby clinic and then transferred to a private hospital, but succumbed to his injuries the next day.
Owori had captained Uganda Premier League champions SC Villa, playing mainly as a right‑back or midfielder, and had earned a contract extension until January 2027. He also represented the national side, the Cranes, in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
SC Villa’s spokesperson Asan Kasingye stated the player was ambushed just outside his home, suffering life‑threatening injuries before medical staff could arrive. The club’s statement called the loss of a player, leader, brother, and friend, and commemorated his impactful presence on and off the pitch.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) described Owori as “a true leader on and off the pitch,” praising his tactical discipline and inspirational role. The Cranes’ officials noted he carried Uganda’s football hopes and mourned losing a key talent.
Key witnesses reported that a group of attackers struck Owori with paving stones before fleeing with his possessions. Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said detectives were pursuing all leads to identify the perpetrators, ensuring the scene was thoroughly documented and evidence preserved.
Parliament observed a minute’s silence in Owori’s honour on Wednesday, demanding a swift investigation and tougher action against criminal gangs. Social media erupted with anger, raising questions about Kampala’s rising crime rate and calls for stronger law‑enforcement measures.
Owori’s death marks the third high‑profile Ugandan sportsperson killed in recent weeks, after rugby international Sydney Gongodyo was also attacked by a mob in Kampala. The tragedy underscores the urgent need for improved security for public figures and residents alike.
