WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. Park Police officer shot during what authorities called an ambush was released from the hospital Tuesday, according to a post on the Park Police X account. The officer, whose identity has not been revealed, was wounded Monday evening while driving in an unmarked vehicle in a Washington neighborhood near Maryland. Park Police Chief Scott Brecht stated in a briefing that the officer was conducting an investigation when two gunmen opened fire. The chief did not disclose details about the investigation at this time.

Reportedly, the officer was shot in the shoulder, as confirmed by a law enforcement official who requested anonymity. The joint investigation led by the Park Police and the Metropolitan Police Department remains ongoing, and authorities are actively seeking the two suspects involved.

Interim Washington Police Chief Jeffery Carroll mentioned in the briefing that the officer appeared to be specifically targeted, suggesting that the gunmen might have identified him as a police officer. Federal authorities are also providing assistance in the investigation.
