In brief
In its quest to expand its influence in Panama, China has encountered various challenges despite some notable achievements. Over recent years, Beijing has focused on strengthening ties with Panama, highlighted by the nation’s shift to recognizing China by cutting diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 2017. Following this move, Panama joined the Belt and Road Initiative, a global infrastructure program championed by Chinese President Xi Jinping designed to enhance China’s global presence.
China's ambitious plans for Panama include projects such as a 250-mile high-speed rail line connecting Panama City and Costa Rica, a new subway system for the capital, and a modern container port developed by Landbridge, a Chinese conglomerate. Recently, the nation also secured a $1.4 billion contract to construct a fourth bridge over the Panama Canal, illustrating ongoing investments aimed at bolstering cooperation between the two countries. A promising prospect on the horizon is the negotiation of a free-trade agreement between Panama and China, potentially enhancing economic relations further.Despite these initiatives, numerous obstacles have arisen, primarily due to American pressure and local challenges in Panama. The competition for influence in this strategically significant region underscores the broader geopolitical contest, as both China and the U.S. vie for economic foothold in Latin America.
