In brief

Move follows tensions after U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear sites, with European nations seeking to resume negotiations.

Britain, France, and Germany are set to reinstate stringent U.N. sanctions on Iran if significant progress on curtailing its nuclear activities isn't made by the end of August. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot made this announcement during a press conference in Brussels, emphasizing that the three nations, which remain signatories to the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, view a resumption of these global sanctions as necessary due to Tehran's lack of compliance.Barrot stated that without a concrete and verifiable commitment from Iran, they will initiate the "snapback" sanctions, which include comprehensive embargoes on arms, banking, and nuclear equipment that were previously lifted. This move aims to incentivize Iran to return to negotiations regarding its nuclear program, which is crucial in light of recent military escalations. Following bombing campaigns on Iranian nuclear facilities by Israel and the United States, Iran ceased its cooperation with international nuclear inspectors from the IAEA. This has raised concerns about the country's stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which has the capability of producing up to ten nuclear weapons, according to the agency.Under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, Iran is obliged to allow inspections, however, adherence has been sporadic since its violations of the 2015 agreement were uncovered. Europe hopes that the looming threat of renewed sanctions will compel Iran to engage with the IAEA again and recommit to dialogue on limiting its uranium enrichment capabilities. So far, the increased tensions have overshadowed any attempts to restart negotiations between Iran and the United States to reach a new nuclear deal, leaving the situation in a precarious state.
