HAMMONTON, N.J. (AP) — A shocking midair collision involving two helicopters in New Jersey resulted in one death and left another person critically injured, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred around 11:25 a.m. on Sunday near Hammonton Municipal Airport, where first responders quickly arrived at the scene to extinguish flames engulfing one of the helicopters.
According to Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel, the Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft involved as an Enstrom F-28A and an Enstrom 280C. Both helicopters were occupied solely by their pilots.
Tragically, one pilot died at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Eyewitness video captured one of the helicopters spiraling dramatically before crashing, underscoring the severity of the collision.
Hammonton, a community of around 15,000 residents located in Atlantic County, has a rich agricultural background and is positioned near the expansive Pine Barrens wilderness.
In light of the incident, both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the crash, as the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event.
