A 24‑tonne Polish tourist bus went off the M3 motorway linking Budapest to Nyíregyháza at about 01:00 local time, overturning into a roadside ditch and killing twelve passengers.
Police say the driver fell asleep at the wheel, and he has been taken into custody. The bus, carrying 57 passengers and two drivers, was levied onto the side of the road before cranes arrived to lift the vehicle.
Firefighters rescued 35 passengers and both drivers; the rest are believed to be trapped beneath the wreck, awaiting extraction. Emergency crews have treated one life‑threatening case, nine severe cases and 37 minor injuries.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar offered condolences to the families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
