In brief
Sri Lankan police have apprehended three individuals potentially linked to threats against Israeli tourists, stirring concern after recent travel advisories were set forth by the U.S. and Israel.
The police in Sri Lanka reported on Thursday that they had arrested three local nationals due to potential threats aimed specifically at Israeli tourists, as confirmed by government spokesperson Vijitha Herath during a press conference. “Further action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigations,” he stated, as inquiries continue. These arrests followed urgent travel warnings from the U.S. Embassy and Israel’s National Security Council. Both organizations had advised their citizens to steer clear of Arugam Bay, recognized as a popular surfing hotspot in Sri Lanka. The U.S. Embassy disclosed it had received credible intelligence about a possible attack on tourists frequenting this area, resulting in an imposed travel restriction for embassy personnel. The Israeli government echoed this sentiment, urging its citizens to vacate Arugam Bay and the southern and western coastal regions of Sri Lanka immediately. They also cautioned against any public displays that could identify individuals as Israeli, such as clothing with Hebrew text or religious symbols, urging people to avoid large gatherings to minimize risk.Further adding to the atmosphere of caution, the British government revised its travel advice for Sri Lanka, highlighting an increased terrorist threat that could affect foreign nationals in various locations, including hotels, tourist attractions, and religious sites. In response to these developments, Sri Lankan authorities have elevated security protocols in major tourist locations, particularly in Colombo and other areas favored by Israeli visitors, like Ella and Weligama. Enhanced security measures are likely owing to a recent influx of tourists establishing temporary prayer halls due to a Jewish holiday.
