Trump Unveils "Super Intelligence Force" to Oversee AI Policy
“The Super Intelligence Force will coordinate the Federal Government's engagement with Consumers, Public Interest Groups, Religious Organizations, Critical Infrastructure Providers, and Super Intelligence Companies,” President Donald Trump said in a statement posted Sunday. The task force, headed by National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton, aims to keep the United States at the forefront of AI development and ensure national security and public interest are safeguarded.
The initiative follows a September 29 executive order that rebranded artificial intelligence as “Super Intelligence”, a move Trump defended by claiming the term “fakes the AI label”. The order instructs all federal agencies to use the new terminology in official documents, websites, and reports.
Clayton, who assumed his role in August, brings experience from his time as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, overseeing high-profile cases such as the drug‑trafficking prosecution of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. His appointment follows the congressional rejection of Trump’s first pick, Bill Pulte.
The task force also includes senior officials such as Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, and Director of the Office of Personnel Management Scott Kupor. Together, they will provide comprehensive oversight of AI safety and development across public and private sectors.
Industry reaction has been mixed. While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman supports AI progress, he stresses the need for balanced risk management. On social media, Elon Musk has begun adopting the new terminology, rebranding his SpaceX AI platform as SpaceXSI and labeling his company a “Super Intelligence Company.”
Critics argue that the rebranding could sow confusion, as “Super Intelligence” implies more advanced systems than current AI. Nonetheless, the Super Intelligence Force shows a clear intent by the administration to lead the conversation on AI governance.
