In brief
During a deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary, a teacher attempted to wrestle a shotgun from a 16‑year‑old former student attacking a special needs class. While the teacher and students were on the floor, a nearby father with a concealed handgun rushed inside and fired several times, killing the suspect and preventing further casualties. Police confirmed the suspect had loaded ammunition and had entered the school on foot, but the motive remains unclear. Authorities identified three children and a teacher among the four fatalities, while two others were injured.
In the early hours of Thursday, 16 October, the peaceful rhythm of a special needs class at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, was shattered by a 16‑year‑old former student wielding a shotgun. The teenager began shooting in the parking lot, then burst through a classroom window and opened fire in the middle of a lesson.
An unexpected act of courage unfolded on the classroom floor. A teacher suddenly threw her mobile phone and tackled the gunman, then tried to wrestle the shotgun from his hands. The struggle left the classroom in disarray, but the teacher remained unharmed.
At that moment, a nearby driver—father of two girls enrolled at the same school—saw the violence unfold. He was in his vehicle when the 16‑year‑old opened fire on a car and inside the school. Armed with a legally concealed .40‑caliber handgun, he entered the building and fired multiple shots, killing the suspect and stopping further bloodshed.
Police later confirmed the suspect carried 44 rounds of ammunition and fired up to 15 rounds before being stopped. The three fatalities—comprising two children and the teacher—were confirmed, while two others were reported injured, including a 7‑year‑old student who remains in stable condition.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz praised the teacher and the father's heroism, calling it a debt of gratitude to those who stepped forward to prevent a worse outcome. The chief also identified the suspect as Griffin J. John II, a previous special needs student at Silver Rail Elementary.
