Swiss Rave Shooting: 22‑Year‑Old Woman Killed, Man Arrested

Police officers watching cordoned area after shooting

A 43‑year‑old Swiss man was arrested after a deadly shooting at a techno rave held on the grounds of a horse‑racing track in Aarau, a town just 46 km west of Zürich.

The gunfire killed 22‑year‑old Italian national Maria Spinelli and wounded four men and one woman, with injuries ranging from minor to severe.

Police received the first report of shots at about 02:30 local time Sunday and launched a nearly 24‑hour man‑hunt before apprehending the suspect shortly before 01:00 GMT Monday.

Authorities say the perpetrator acted alone, though the full sequence of events and motive remain under investigation; Italy’s prime minister has urged Swiss authorities to expose the case, and Italian officials have been dispatched to Zurich to oversee proceedings.

The incident underscores Switzerland’s high gun‑ownership rates; despite recent tighter controls, serious shootings remain rare, with the last major attack occurring in 2001 when a gunman killed 14 officials before taking his own life.
