Seven Britons Among 13 Dead in Spain Wildfires


Authorities in Spain have confirmed that seven of the 13 victims who perished in the July 2026 wildfires were British nationals. Twelve of the fatalities were from other countries, while a single Spanish resident was also among those lost.


The blaze, which raged through the province of Almería in the south‑east of the country, has become the deadliest wildfire event recorded in Spain in recent years. Fires claimed 7,000 hectares of land and spread across several towns and villages.


The British couple Pete and Fran Gillam, residents of the village of Bédar—which was hit hardest by the flames—were confirmed dead by their family after the fire destroyed their home. The Gillams’ daughter, Danielle Gillam-Kirton, posted a heartbreaking statement on Facebook, expressing her grief and confirming that her parents did not survive the blaze.


Survivor Malcolm Timbrell, 70, recounted his narrow escape while staying in his Bédar house. He described how he fled into abandoned cars, managing to survive in the last of the cars despite heavy damage. Timball’s wife and many other friends are believed to have perished in the manner his story details.


Spain’s emergency services were forced to evacuate more than 1,500 residents from the affected areas as firefighters fought to contain the fires. The total number of deaths, 13, includes eight women and five men—an all‑adult toll.


The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has stated that it continues to support British nationals affected by the tragedy, maintaining close contact with Spanish authorities to provide aid to families.


The land around the wildfire has been left in a charred state, with houses and vegetation noted for their devastation. Firefighters worked tirelessly over several days to bring the spread under control, limiting the blaze to its maximum reach before full containment.


This disaster underscores the rising risk of wildfires in southern Spain, where heatwaves frequently push temperatures beyond 40°C, contributing to rapid fire spread and making evacuation and rescue operations more challenging.
