The IOM stated that search efforts are ongoing in the southern province of Abyan where authorities found 54 bodies washed ashore in the Khanfar district, alongside 14 others sent to a morgue in the provincial capital Zinjibar. Abdusattor Esoev, head of IOM Yemen, stressed the pressing need for better safety measures for migrants, noting how deadly conditions continue to worsen en route to the Gulf Arab states where many seek work.

The IOM highlights that Yemen is a key migration route from the Horn of Africa, with over 60,000 newcomers arriving in Yemen in 2024 alone. In recent months, many lives have been lost in similar tragedies, including incidents where boats were knowingly sent into hazardous waters. The IOM’s Missing Migrants Project has identified over 3,400 deaths connected to this perilous migration route, with 1,400 due to drowning. Despite the risks, the relentless quest for a better life drives many to bravely attempt these dangerous journeys.
