President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Indiana U.S. Rep. Jim Baird, a Republican, and his wife are currently recovering in a hospital after a serious car accident. Trump, speaking to House GOP members at a retreat at the Kennedy Center, expressed optimism for their recovery, stating, “They’re going to be okay, but they had a pretty bad accident, and we’re praying that they get out of that hospital very quickly.”
The 80-year-old Baird has been serving as the representative for west central Indiana since 2019. His congressional office has not yet provided additional details regarding the accident. The news comes amidst a challenging period for Republicans, as they mourn the death of seven-term U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa from California and deal with the resignation of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, which tightens their control over the House with 218 seats compared to the Democrats’ 213.
This accident echoes recent tragedies within Indiana politics, as Rep. Jackie Walorski, also a Republican, was killed last year in a head-on collision that claimed the lives of two staffers and the other driver involved.
