Poland Fires Alert After Russian Mi‑8 Helicopter Skims Its Airspace

Poland’s defence ministry accused the Russian military of briefly violating its airspace when a Mi‑8 helicopter from the Kaliningrad exclave crossed over the town of Braniewo on Wednesday morning. The aircraft stayed in Polish airspace for 42 seconds before being tracked and escorted out by radar.

Polish forces scrambled fighter jets to intercept the helicopter and kept ground units on full alert, citing references to an ongoing “hybrid threat” by Russia. The incident is the latest in a series of drone and missile incursions that have targeted Polish and other NATO infrastructure.

The defence ministry said the event demonstrates Russia’s willingness to test air defence readiness amid heightened tensions following its full‑scale invasion of Ukraine. Moscow has not offered an immediate comment, whereas NATO officials have warned EU members to remain vigilant.

In related incidents, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has suggested that Russia may be staging drone and missile strikes to intimidate eastern European allies. French President Emmanuel Macron, too, has vowed to strengthen protective measures for critical infrastructure against hybrid attacks.

The Mi‑8, a transport helicopter common in Russian military use, was photographed over Braniewo, with its flight monitored by Polish radar systems. The aircraft’s 300‑metre flight depth and short duration raised alarms as a deliberate test of Polish air defences, according to the army’s operational command.
