In brief
After years of attempts to unearth his discarded Bitcoin wallet from a landfill, Howells suggests buying the site to facilitate the search.
For over a decade, James Howells has tirelessly sought permission from the Newport City Council to excavate a landfill site in South Wales, hoping to locate a hard drive containing a Bitcoin key he accidentally disposed of in 2013. Howell’s estimate values the lost Bitcoin at approximately $800 million. His plan involves buying the landfill, employing advanced A.I. technology to scan through thousands of tons of waste, and using magnetic belts to isolate metallic objects in his quest to recover the lost hard drive. "This seems logical," he asserts.Despite securing a recovery firm and technical assistance, Howell's previous legal and negotiation attempts with the city have been unsuccessful. With the landfill poised for closure, he is making one last appeal: either grant him access for excavation or allow him to purchase the land outright. This new approach, he hopes, could benefit both him and the city. "Seems like a better plan for me and the city," he stated, envisioning a future where the landfill is cleared and potentially transformed into a park or reinstated as a waste site. Howells remains optimistic as he presses forward in a search that has become emblematic of the struggles faced within the crypto space.
