In brief
17 relatives, including El Chapo's ex-wife, surrender to U.S. authorities amidst speculations of plea bargains with the Department of Justice.
The security secretary of Mexico announced on Tuesday that a group of 17 family members linked to Sinaloa Cartel leaders has recently crossed into the United States, indicating a possible deal involving the Trump administration. Reports suggest that these relatives, notably the ex-wife of notorious cartel figure El Chapo, were flown from a stronghold in Mexico to Tijuana and subsequently surrendered to U.S. federal authorities, as per information from the news platform Pie de Nota. The Sinaloa Cartel is recognized globally as one of the most powerful criminal organizations, though it has experienced internal strife due to violence among rival factions, particularly as many leaders face legal challenges in the United States. When queried about the situation, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated that she had no additional information to provide. In a more decisive acknowledgment, Mexican security head Omar García Harfuch confirmed that the family members who crossed over included those related to Ovidio Guzmán López, one of El Chapo's sons, who was extradited to the U.S. in 2023. García Harfuch suggested that their entrance into the United States was likely conditioned by negotiations or a plea agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, hinting at an evolving situation surrounding cartel leadership and law enforcement strategies.
