29‑year‑old rookie‑first‑round pick Brandon Clarke, who played for the Memphis Grizzlies, has been confirmed dead after an accidental overdose of heroin and cocaine.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death as accidental, following the discovery of Clarke unresponsive in a bedroom of a San Fernando Valley house on 11 May. Paramedics pronounced him dead on scene.
In its preliminary report, the medical examiner also cited the "combined effects of multiple prescription medications" as a significant contributor, though the specific drugs were not identified. A full report will be released later.
Clarke, a Canadian‑born dual‑citizen who was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NBA draft, saw his 2025‑26 season truncated to just two games due to injuries.
The Grizzlies released a post‑humous tribute saying the player was an "outrageously outstanding teammate and a better person whose impact will not be forgotten." Clarke played 309 career games, averaging 10.2 points per game.
Earlier in April, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas on speeding and controlled‑substance possession charges.
He attended San Jose State and Gonzaga before being drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder, later traded to the Grizzlies.
