In brief
Portuguese authorities have initiated renewed searches in connection with the 2007 disappearance of Madeleine McCann, as investigations into suspect Christian Brückner continue.
New searches are underway in Portugal linked to the decades-old case of Madeleine McCann, a British child who vanished during a family vacation in May 2007. The latest police efforts are being conducted near the Praia da Luz resort, where the then three-year-old was last seen. The Polícia Judiciária, Portugal's principal criminal investigation body, stated that the operation commenced on Monday and is expected to conclude by Friday. This renewed investigation arises from a request by German authorities probing Christian Brückner, a German man considered a prime suspect in Madeleine's disappearance. He is currently serving a seven-year sentence in Germany for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz from 2005. Evidence collected during these new searches will be forwarded to Germany's Federal Criminal Police Service, contingent on the approval of the national Public Prosecutor’s Office. The Metropolitan Police, which originally handled the case, have stated they are aware of the ongoing searches but are not directly involved. Despite the long passage of time since the incident, authorities remain committed to uncovering the truth surrounding Madeleine's mysterious disappearance.
