In brief

Kenya's health ministry has notified a 39‑year‑old relative of the man who died from Ebola ten days earlier. The patient fell ill while in quarantine, underscoring the virus’s incubation period of up to 21 days. Early detection has boosted recovery chances and limited potential transmission. Authorities have traced 113 of 128 contacts, with 108 in quarantine, and all 28 cases remain linked. This follows a larger outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has claimed over 4,000 lives.

Kenya’s health ministry has announced a second case of Ebola today. The new patient, a 39‑year‑old male, is a close relative of the man who died of the disease ten days earlier.

The relative had been in quarantine at the National Hospital in Nairobi when the illness appeared, the ministry said. Ebola’s incubation can last from two to 21 days, so early detection here has cut the chance of community spread.

Officials have identified 128 people who were in contact with the first victim. Since the death, 113 of those contacts have been located, 108 are still under quarantine, and tracing of the remaining 15 continues. The ministry added that none of the new case’s contacts have shown symptoms yet.

The outbreak in Kenya follows a broader surge in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has resulted in more than 4,000 deaths this year. No approved vaccine or treatment is yet available, though clinical trials are underway.

Health officials urge the public to remain calm but vigilant, and to seek immediate medical attention if they develop flu‑like symptoms or have had contact with someone who has.
