In brief

Yaron Lischinsky, 30, was remembered as a bridge-builder after he was fatally shot outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington.

The grave of Yaron Lischinsky in Beit Zayit, Israel, was adorned with wreaths on Sunday as family and friends mourned his unexpected passing. Just weeks prior, Lischinsky had planned a trip to Israel with his partner, Sarah Milgrim, aiming to introduce her to his family and propose marriage. Instead, he was laid to rest in his hometown as news of their tragic shooting reverberated through international communities. On Wednesday night, Lischinsky, 30, and Milgrim, 26, were shot outside the museum after attending a reception organized by the American Jewish Committee for young professionals and diplomats. The identified assailant, Elias Rodriguez, 31, from Chicago, reportedly shouted “Free, free Palestine!” during his arrest, echoing sentiments expressed during global protests against Israel amid ongoing conflict following Hamas's assault on October 7, 2023, which has claimed numerous Palestinian lives.Rodriguez faces multiple charges, including murder of foreign officials, first-degree murder, and other offenses, with U.S. authorities also classifying the incident as a hate crime and an act of terrorism. Both Lischinsky, a research assistant at the Israeli Embassy, and Milgrim, who engaged with diplomatic delegations, were recognized for their commitment to fostering peace and understanding during a time of heightened tensions.
