In brief
Saudi Arabia and the UAE are engaging both nations to ease rising tensions, with diplomatic efforts underway.
The ongoing tension between India and Pakistan has reached a boiling point, prompting interventions from Gulf states like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The diplomatic efforts come at a time when the United States has adopted a more passive role, leaving the Gulf states to take the initiative. The strain has been escalating for two weeks following India's accusations that Pakistan was behind a terrorist attack on its territory in Kashmir. Responding to these allegations, India conducted airstrikes targeting locations in both Pakistan and the Pakistani-administered areas of Kashmir. In contrast to previous instances where U.S. diplomacy has been pivotal, current mediation efforts are primarily in the hands of Gulf diplomats. Senior Saudi diplomat Adel al-Jubeir visited New Delhi and Islamabad this week to facilitate dialogue between the countries. Pakistani officials reported they are in regular contact with envoys from other Gulf nations, including the UAE and Kuwait. Iran’s foreign minister has also been actively engaging both parties to foster a resolution. The Gulf states maintain strong relationships with both countries; India has a significant population of expatriates residing in the Gulf as well as extensive energy trade links. Conversely, Pakistan has been a crucial defense ally for Saudi Arabia for decades. The UAE and Saudi Arabia have a history of mediating previous escalations, as seen during heightened tensions in 2019, when top officials from these countries visited both India and Pakistan to ease conflicts. This region is witnessing a repeat of that dynamic, as experts assert that Gulf states view mediation both as a means of enhancing their global influence and as a tool to secure their own national interests. The ongoing efforts reflect a broader strategy by these nations, aiming to navigate the intricacies of regional politics and bolster stability.
