After a murder in Killarney, Irish police have called on their Jordanian counterparts to help track a suspect who fled the country, according to Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan.
The victim, locally identified as 40‑year‑old Jamey Carney who had moved from New York five years earlier, died at a residence in the Homeland housing estate. Gardaí said a man who was a “person of interest” in the case had already left the jurisdiction.
O’Callaghan told RTÉ that the suspect reportedly took a bus to Dublin and then a flight to the Middle East, a country he is believed to be originally from. He stressed that the lack of an extradition treaty between Ireland and Jordan makes the pursuit of the suspect more difficult, but the police will pursue every line of inquiry.
Gardaí have halted the investigation and are engaging with Interpol and Europol. The Ministry noted the strong connections Gardaí have with other police forces worldwide and is committed to bringing the suspect to justice.
This case highlights the challenges of cross‑border criminal procedures and shows the expanding cooperation between nations in the fight against violent crime.
