In brief
With Tropical Cyclone Dana closing in on India's eastern coast, approximately one million people have been evacuated in a massive preemptive safety measure. The storm is projected to hit the states of Odisha and West Bengal, causing significant disruptions and concerns over flooding and landslides in low-lying areas.
On Thursday, officials reported that the cyclone was moving northwest across the Bay of Bengal, classified at the strength of a Category 1 hurricane with wind speeds reaching 75 miles per hour. Dana is expected to make landfall along Odisha's coastline early Friday. In light of the impending disaster, more than 5,000 temporary camps have been established to accommodate displaced residents, particularly in Odisha, a state that has historically been vulnerable to severe cyclones. The last major cyclone, which struck in 1999, resulted in nearly 10,000 fatalities, instilling fear among locals as they brace for Dana. However, thanks to lessons learned from past catastrophes, Odisha has enhanced its disaster readiness, including the implementation of a dedicated disaster management agency, improved shelter facilities, and better evacuation infrastructure. As part of the precautionary measures, the Indian government has mobilized rescue teams and the navy to aid in disaster mitigation. Alerts have been disseminated throughout the coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal, warning of potential cyclonic conditions and heavy rainfalls, with predictions ranging from two to eight inches of rainfall.Transportation has been heavily affected, with numerous flights canceled at major airports, including Kolkata and Biju Patnaik International Airport, along with more than 100 train cancellations. Classes and exams across affected districts have been suspended, and fishing practices have been halted due to expected rough seas.Experts warn of possible structural damage, and the Indian Meteorological Department has advised the public to remain vigilant for flash floods and landslides as the cyclone approaches.
