In brief
During refurbishment of Corsewall Lighthouse in Scotland, mechanical engineers discovered a bottle containing a handwritten message from 1892. The find has sparked excitement among the restoration team, revealing a glimpse into the past and the original lighthouse keepers.
Mechanical engineers refurbishing the Corsewall Lighthouse in Kirkcolm, Scotland recently stumbled upon an unexpected treasure: a glass bottle containing a handwritten note, hidden within a wall cavity. The discovery occurred as Ross Russell, one of the engineers, was inspecting the lighthouse, which has been guiding sailors along Scotland’s rugged coastline for over 200 years. When Russell found the bottle, he promptly called his coworkers and the lighthouse keeper, Barry Miller, to share the astonishing find. The bottle, sealed with rusted wire and an aged cork, housed a note that bore the date of September 4, 1892. Anticipation filled the air as the team delicately extracted the note from its container using cables.Miller, who rushed to the site when informed of the discovery, recalled his excitement: "We were shaking, especially me. I couldn’t keep my hands still." As he unrolled the timeworn letter, the atmosphere was electric with curiosity. The content of the letter, which is yet to be thoroughly examined, raises tantalizing questions: Was it a love letter, a complaint, or perhaps a hint of something more mysterious? For now, the lighthouse workers have made light of the situation, with Miller jokingly stating that they swore to secrecy about any potential treasure maps that might be revealed. The illuminated history of the Corsewall Lighthouse and its keepers has sparked a greater appreciation for the region's maritime heritage.
