ICE Agent Fires During Bronx Operation, Sparks Outrage in New York

On Thursday, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent discharged his weapon during a targeted operation in the Bronx, aiming to arrest a so‑called criminal illegal alien. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the incident and said the victim was alive and received medical treatment at a local hospital.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the action "unconscionable and incredibly serious," adding that early reports indicated the agents had surrounded the suspect and a five‑year‑old child in a car before firing multiple rounds. He stated the child was physically unharmed.

Governor Kathy Hochul informed President Donald Trump of the shooting and sought the release of body‑camera footage to establish the facts and ensure accountability.

DHS identified the suspect as a Dominican national with a prior conviction for grand larceny and multiple arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons. He had been arrested in December 2023 and released days later, and the agency linked him to the transnational criminal group Trinitarios.

In the wake of the incident, protesters gathered at the scene chanting "We want justice" and "ICE off our streets now". New York City, a Democratic stronghold, is one of several municipalities that prohibit local police from aiding federal immigration enforcement.

The shooting follows other high‑profile incidents involving ICE officers this year, including the death of Renee Good in Minneapolis and a Venezuelan DoorDash driver struck by an ICE vehicle in Texas.
