In brief
Amid heightened tensions, over 8,000 Afrikaners apply for U.S. refugee program, but South Africa’s government strongly disagrees with their eligibility.
President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has voiced sharp criticism towards white South Africans who are seeking refugee status in the United States, calling them "cowardly" for abandoning their responsibilities to aid in the transformation of their homeland. In a recent press conference, he stated, “They are running away,” further arguing that seeking refuge instead of contributing positively to society is an act of cowardice. Over 8,000 South Africans have expressed interest in a U.S. initiative aimed at providing an expedited path for Afrikaners, despite current restrictions on refugee admission from other nations during the Trump administration. This program has not only expedited the arrival of some individuals, who were flown into Washington on a U.S.-chartered flight, but has also highlighted the complex racial dynamics in post-apartheid South Africa.Ramaphosa asserted that Afrikaners, traditionally a white ethnic minority associated with the apartheid regime, do not meet the criteria for refugee status outlined by the U.S. government. Their claim as refugees has been met with strong objection from the South African government, underscoring a growing rift between the nations regarding these developments.
