At least eight individuals lost their lives in a devastating hot-air balloon crash on Saturday in Praia Grande, a scenic tourist destination in Brazil. The balloon, carrying 21 passengers including the pilot, caught fire mid-air before crashing in a wooded region. Fortunately, the remaining 13 passengers managed to survive the incident. State military authorities indicated that the crash occurred at approximately 8 a.m. local time. Eyewitness accounts and footage from Brazilian media showed the balloon engulfed in flames prior to its descent.
A rescue operation involving 27 firefighters and aerial support was immediately mobilized in the aftermath of the incident. Preliminary investigations revealed that the pilot survived and reported that a reserve gas cylinder in the gondola ignited, ultimately leading to the crash. In a frantic effort to save the passengers, the pilot instructed them to jump out of the burning balloon, which temporarily ascended after some passengers escaped and became weighted down.
