In brief

Israeli authorities respond to suspected terrorist threat while balancing tense cease-fire with Hamas

Three buses exploded in parking lots in the Tel Aviv area on Thursday night, prompting fears of a coordinated terrorist strike and resulting in the suspension of bus and train services across Israel. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the explosions occurred in empty depots. In the wake of the blasts, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced directives for a significant military operation in the West Bank, targeting militant infrastructures. He also ordered increased security measures across Israeli urban areas to prevent potential follow-up attacks. The explosions took place in Bat Yam, a city located just south of Tel Aviv. Mayor Tzvika Brot stated that additional security patrols would be deployed throughout the city, assuring residents that while there would be heightened vigilance, normal activities, including schooling, would proceed as planned. Ofir Karni, the director of the Dan bus company, recounted that the last passenger on one of the affected buses recognized a suspicious bag and alerted the driver. The bus was quickly parked in the depot, and it exploded soon after the passengers exited. The timing of these incidents is particularly concerning as they coincide with ongoing military actions in the West Bank and the nearing end of Israel's fragile cease-fire with Hamas in Gaza, further raising tensions in an already volatile region.
