A 14‑year‑old pupil was detained after a gunman opened fire on the principal and a teacher at Lakanal middle school in Aubagne on Monday morning.
The student was apprehended immediately and no children were injured; the teachers received treatment for wounds that are not life threatening.
Investigators say the incident is not connected to broader protests over school conditions, according to French media and sources familiar with the case.
Education Minister Edouard Geffray posted on social media that a student is the supposed perpetrator and added that he would visit the scene with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.
The pupil reportedly entered the school with a gun, several shots were fired, and he was then restrained by staff. The headteacher (53) was struck in the leg, while a 37‑year‑old teacher sustained a thigh injury.
The mayor said all students were immediately confined and secured within seconds.
