Five Swans players have been banned for the rest of the AFL season, following a police investigation into a possible sexual assault that took place at the Pullman Hotel after a Sunday clash in Melbourne.
The players – Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, James Jordon, and Riley Bice – are members of the Sydney Swans’ core group and were suspected of breaching club codes by extending late‑night drinking and bringing women to the hotel.
Victoria Police have opened a case into a report of sexual violence earlier in the morning, but the investigators have not yet formally interviewed or arrested any of the footballers. All five remain free on bail.
Club chairman Andrew Pridham apologised to supporters, players and the broader community, explaining the sanctions were taken to align with the Swans’ standards, independent of any legal process.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Swans said they respect the police inquiry and that the AFL had pledged to support the club’s action. Chief Executive Matthew Pavlich added that the team was “deeply embarrassed” and that the women's welfare was a priority.
The AFL’s chief executive Andrew Dillon called the allegations “deeply concerning”, noting that the league does not have a strict no‑fault stand‑down policy for serious offences but must handle cases on a case‑by‑case basis.
Sydney finished second on the ladder this season and will play North Melbourne at the SCG on Sunday in the final regular‑season fixture before the finals campaign. The disciplinary move could have significant implications for the Swans’ finals bid.
